Dugi Otok ili Veli Škoj : Croatia' s Long Island

Hrvatska se u Sredozemno more proteže na ukupno 1185 otoka, hridi i grebena. Od toga otoka 698 (67 naseljenih i 651 nenaseljen), 389 hridi i 78 grebena (podaci preuzeti iz Statističkog ljetopisa Republike Hrvatske 2004., Državni zavod za statistiku, Zagreb). U slučaju ovog otoka pišem ime velikim slovom, jer se doista radi o velikom otoku, dužine cca. 45 km, širok između 1 – 4 km. Zovu ga najvećim i najdužim, a sva su mjesta povezana dobrim cestovnim putem. Bit ovog skromnog teksta jest kratak dvojezični osvrt na ljepotu hrvatskog otočnog arhipelaga, međutim ne želim prepričavati. Zato pogledajte slike i krenite na pokusno putovanje internetom.

Croatia spreads into the Adriatic See over 1185 islands, crags and cliffs. There are 698 islands (67 inhabited and 651 uninhabited), 389 crags and 78 cliffs (according to the 2004 statistics of the CROATIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS ). I’ll freely use capitalization letters in this particular island’s name, since it really is a big island, approx. 45 km long and 1 to 4 km wide, and as such they call it the biggest and longest Croatian island. The island’s villages are all well connected by an acceptably good road. The main idea of this rather modest text is to offer a short bilingual review about the beauties of the Croatian island archipelago, though the intention is not a simple recount. Therefore take a look at the pictures and start a test-visit so to speak via the internet links offered.

What one should visit while on Dugi otok:

Ø absolutely every village including the beach Saharun as well as the natural ones and small bays

Ø the island offers beautiful yachting possibilities and facilities

Ø the village Žman

Ø the lighthouse Veli rat (the biggest in Croatia)

Ø the ferry connection is more than agreeable (Zadar> Sali, Zaglav or Brbinj when by car)

Ø take a lot of suncream with you

Ø wonderful gastronomy and good wines

Ø nature park Telaščica & the Strašna peć cave
